Rick Yost, says:
This is one of the only two photos taken of the man. Looks to have been Photoshop-ed.
Speaking of artwork, you can find my artwork on our black Robert Johnson Guitar Festival commemorative t-shirts at Pearl.
It's gonna be a great show!

April Powell, says:
Ah, yes, I remember when the photoshopped Robert Johnson image on the 1994 honorary postage stamp (based on the same original photo that the one above is, also without cigarette) caused a bit of a stir. Looks like the original photo that these images are based on is still causing some controversy among Johnson's putative heirs.

Rick Yost, says:
Teresa- Not trying to be too 'politically-critical' here...can you explain why it was deemed necessary to remove the cigarette from the mouth of a man in an 80 year old photo?
I'm just curious as to whether it was to save people from learning that folks back 80 years ago actually smoked, or whether you just thought it was cool to alter the appearance of one of the only two photos taken of this national cultural icon?
Does it really make a difference? Of course not. I'm just wondering how PC Pegasus is becoming.

Maybe TGub wasn't even aware of the cig controversy?

Teresa Gubbins, says:
uh i definitely don't have time to remove a cigarette. i just went for what i thought was the nicest, cleanest original image to photoshop. sorry for stupidly stepping into the big cigarette controversy; as doyle wisely perceives, i had no clue. no subtext here, i don't care if the guy has a cigarette in his mouth or not. all apologies, i'll definitely avoid this one next time, was just trying to tout what i thought was a cool show

Mike Orren, says:
tgub did not remove the cig. The us postal service did. (see april's comment). That's the photo tgub started with.
And the day we become pc, is the day I give up on humanity. And beer.

Well, I certainly stepped in it this time didn't I?
My apologies to Teresa and to Pegasus! Since you DID Photoshop the image, I foolishly assumed that you removed the cigarette.
No matter who removed it or why- it's stupid. (Yes, I thought about whether 'stupid' was the right word or not- It is!) Not because I'm a smoker or I thought 'we smokers' were being dumped on- again.
But because someone altered an historical record, (one of the only two photos in existence of this man)- hence changing a detail of history that didn't suit their tastes. ("Oh, we love his music, but that cigarette is tacky and has got to go!")
Maybe we should put a smile on his face while we're at it! Then let's remove the guns in Bonnie & Clyde photos because showing weapons might promote violence.
Trying to change even the slightest detail of our recorded history is just stupid. Especially a photo- something most would agree is accurate, as opposed to so much of our contentious past.
Some principles shouldn't be discarded simply because our cute and fancy technology allows us to do so.
Now I will slowly limp my old, grumpy, troll-like self back under the porch where I belong.

Rick Yost, says:
Yes, I did see it and I gotta say- I like it! (cough)
The event went very well. The house was packed, spirits were high, the music was exceptional, and a good time was had by all. Thank you Pegasus for the promo help.
Robert Johnson's music is so inspiring that two patrons made the effort separately to leave Pearl and actually walk the quarter-mile to 508 Park Avenue where the Dallas recordings were made. They said they wanted to see the building where a part of history they cherished took place.
I love my job.
