Alma Mahler and Her Vienna: Of Mixed Marriages, Anti-Semitism, and Cancelled Careers
March 18, 2008
, 2008
Alma Schindler Mahler-Gropius-Werfel’s (1879-1964) three marriages to historical giants (cleverly lampooned in Tom Lehrer’s satirical songs of the 1960s) have overshadowed her own musical achievements in imperial Vienna just before World War I. Framed by a live performance of her Lieder by SMU voice professor Virginia Dupuy and faculty composer/pianist Simon Sargon, this lecture by Dr. Alessandra Comini, University Distinguished Professor of Art History, examines the composer’s formative years.
