At the Death House Door follows the remarkable career of Rev.Carroll Pickett, who served for 15 years as the chaplain to the infamous “Walls” death row prison unit in Huntsville, Texas.
During that time, he ministered to 95 men who were put to death by lethal injection. After each execution, Pickett recorded his thoughts in an audiotape account of the fateful day. The film also tells the story of Carlos De Luna, a convict whose execution bothered Pickett more than any other. He believed the man was innocent, and two Chicago Tribune reporters turn up evidence that strongly suggests he was right.
This documentary is a thought-provoking and compelling look inside the criminal mind, inside the execution chamber, and inside the heart of a remarkable man with an impossible job. Rev. Pickett is today an outspoken anti-death penalty activist. He is retired from the Department of Corrections but still preaches near Huntsville, Texas.
