Manrico and Accio are brothers in a turbulent Italian family in the 1960s. Accio decides to leave the seminary and is drawn into his villages’ Fascist movement. On the other hand, Manrico—under the banner of the local Communist party—works to organize factory workers. Despite this political conflict, the brothers remain close. Things get rocky only when the two become interested in the same woman.
The political, emotional and personal choices that the two brothers must make become a prism through which director Daniele Luchetti expertly examines the bonds between family members and the ideological choices that faced many in the turbulent times of the 1960s and 1970s. As we in the United States enter a presidential election year, My Brother Is an Only Child is a timely and profound testament to the impact politics can have on our most personal relationships.
