Opening Reception - Open Terrain

500X is pleased to present the work of Thomas Feulmer, Keri Oldham, Brian Spolans, and Kyle Warren in Open Terrain. Through various means the artists offer their analysis on life amid contemporary media, attempting to evaluate the minutiae of modern-day living and humanness.

Thomas Feulmer's recent work looks at intimacy and attraction. Using collectible figurines and text from online personal ads, he tries to understand how desire and gender are expressed and articulated.

Keri Oldham is a mixed media artist whose work speaks on the complex process of forming an identity. Using textiles, found objects, and discarded clothing, her work focuses on personality and containment. Compartments, packages, and clothing-like objects are metaphors for how we communicate or conceal identity. Often inspired by clothing, Oldham's work investigates how fashion both expresses and fails to disclose our inner life and nature.

Brian Spolans' work is heavily influenced by film, television, video games, and literature. He creates narratives by absorbing repeated storylines, plot devices, or visual cues from mass culture to reconsider and refine. He combines these narratives to reveal an increasingly complex and intricate environment.

Kyle Warren creates stark images that act as frameworks for the viewer's projected subjectivity. His recent work borrows proposed frameworks from other individual's experiences, using celebrity images and vacation photos that are not his own.

Project Room: Cuckoo by Mark Collop and Colby Parsons Cuckoo is an interactive site-specific installation inspired by cuckoo clocks.
