Lone Star Film Festival - Hotel Very Welcome
November 14, 2008
, 2008
Run time: 90 min. | Germany | Language: English and German with English Subtitles
In Sonja Heiss' directorial debut, five European tourists wander through Southeast Asia in search of that one life-defining moment. Perhaps it will come to them via eccentric meditation methods at a new age spiritual retreat or empty sexual experiences at all-night raves in Thailand; maybe it will be while they are on camelback in the Indian desert with a disinterested guide or stuck in transit while negotiating language barriers from a hotel room phone.Looking to escape their insecurities, disintegrating relationships, overbearing responsibilities, and the monotony of life back home, Heiss' young travelers relish the opportunity to redefine their lives—if only this one time—but of the various obstacles they encounter, the trickiest ones they run into are their own expectations. Shot with a documentary-style lens, this wry, bittersweet film is delightfully humorous at all the right moments as we journey with these hapless twentysomethings to a destination only realized in their dreams.
