I recall seeing a fat man all tattoed up and asked him how this happend to him and he said, I always wanted to be an icon and so I joined the Circus, and I have not had a lonely day since... people do ask me questions and I do tell the first 100 pen and ink drawing were painful, but the rest has been pure fun, an old interview with a 400 pound fat man...from Coney Island New York.... So, I never caught this show when it was with some of the other events like Lollapalooza, but this seemed quite a bit more tame than I expected (and than some of the clips provided by Mike). I guess because of the new sponsorship (the most interesting beer in the world?), they had to tone it down a bit. That's all I can figure.
Oh, and nice touch opening the doors a good 1 1/2 hours after the tickets indicated, then the show starting almost 2 hours after indicated. I'm sure this was more the show's fault than the Granada's, but clearly something screwed up was going on.
It also seemed pretty short - there was one entertainer in the program guide that I didn't see in the show, so I wonder if that was a contributing factor.
In any event, it was an interesting show and I had a good time, although I'd have to say it didn't quite live up to it's name.

We showed up a little after eight, saw the line extending A FULL BLOCK, and decided to grab some beers at another bar. An hour and a half later, gambrinous and bored, we wandered over to the doors only to be told that they're at maximum capacity and that we won't be getting in.
I guess that's what happens when you give away a bazillion free tickets.

Lisa Lawrence Merritt, says:
I almost left because we had to wait too long for the show to start. It was ridculous to keep saying "any minute now."
The temple throbbing house blend DJ along with the screens repeating The Most Interesting Show in the World had me thinking that is was all a joke and that the beer swilling Audience was actually the show....like some sort of performance art thingy.
Anywho, the show was short but intense and my guest and I throughly enjoyed it. Free made it even better. ;)
The Russian performer was over the top.

Scott Doyle, says:
Is it really that tough to organize something at this place? Imo, quite ridiculous for peeps who reserved tix in advance to be turned away simply b/c we didn't stand in line wasting valuable drinking time. After all, that's why you bother reserving. Not quite sure why they didn't want our booze money as we waited for the show...
Unfortunately that's 0 for 2 on <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/events/2008/oct/22/111448/#c37478">my Granada experiences</a> thus far, peeps. I'll probably be heading out again to see <a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/events/2008/nov/12/107781/">Electric Six</a> in November...hopefully that will be their saving grace.

James Scott, says:
yeah Scott, you're kind of getting the worst of it if you went to that show Friday night. I agree, it was very poorly organized, but I have to think it had more to do with the '...Show' than the Granada. There had to be some weird requirements that made them do some of the things they did (like free tickets), as well as holding things up till 10 oclock.
Lisa - I agree with thinking the screens repeating the same 15 second video was some sort of subliminal message getting us to go out and perform some act of random violence or something. You would think the video would have been more "Interesting". Although for me DJ Merritt's set was the only thing that didn't keep me from wanting to leave, but I guess only if you enjoy that sort of thing.

Yes, well, if the Electric Six show isn't at least mediocre from where I'm standing (moshing), I may just swear off the Granada altogether. <small>Unless, of course, a band plays that I can't resist.</small>
I'm begging you, Granada...gimme just one great experience out of my first three!

What did you hate about the Butthole Surfers show, Scott?

Scott Doyle, says:
Didn't hate it, simply found it odd that a venue so well known for live shows had such poor acoustics (<a href="http://www.pegasusnews.com/events/2008/oct/22/111448/#c37497">you concurred</a>, btw).
Between not understanding a word said at that show, and this ordeal...Granada hasn't given me anything to write home about. Granted, pit was fun at B.S., but anybody with a stage can match that.

Pavel Lishin, says:
I think that might have been the surfers' fault as much as anyone else's - acoustics at Gogol Bordello were great.
And there are places that outright forbid moshing, so I'm all for any place that not only has an understanding policy, but even puts a guy out front to make sure everybody understands how it works.

a "friend of a friend" says that the BH Surfers weren't happy with their performance in dallas... called it a lousy show amongst themselves. i've never had an issue with the sound at granada and i've been there oodles of times. that's right, oodles

Scott Doyle, says:
I realize this. I'm not letting one show cloud my judgment; Granada wouldn't make a name for itself if that was the norm.
However, if I'm paying the cost of admission, it's not an unreasonable expectation that I actually comprehend the sounds hitting my ears. On top of that, very next trip out we got turned down flat despite reserving a few square feet to stand in...would have happily spent money on drinks while waiting, too, had they simply let people in rather than keeping such a ridiculous line.
So, my personal experience hasn't lived up to the hype. Considering I've yet to see Electric Six live ahem I'm hoping it will revive my spirits.

DC, says:
Well, there were several ways to see this show. One was you knew someone somewhere who gots you a VIP pass. This meant that you could go inside, drink a pile of DE and sit around for a couple of hours.
There was also the free tickets thing. Email the place and you're on the list! In this case, you could stand around for almost three hours while the people upstairs in da vee eye pee could look down upon you.
Thirdly, you could be some popped collar douche who signed up to bring three ladies for 10 pm or something close to it.
http://www.thedallaspulse.com/events_...
In the end, there was no technical problem nor other issue with the show. No one ever planned to be on stage before 10PM.
Aaaannnnddd.....
I saw the JRC almost ten years ago in a basement. I recall the fat ladies getting vacuumed into plastic bags, the NG tubes and the guy who got himself through a tennis racket. She hadn't.
In the end, I guess this is what happens when you go corporate. I wouldn't say this was terrible, but seriously? If we had been standing around for 2 hours looking at the walls while the guy was saying "ffiiiivee minutes intillll...." I would have also been justifiably unhappy.
Conclusions:
1) JRC ain't what it used to be. 2) This event was about at par for Maxim journalism. 3) You CAN get drunk on DE, but I don't suggest it.
