2008 AIA Dallas Design Awards

World-renowned architects, some of whom are designing Dallas' newest downtown landmarks, arrive in the city Sept. 17 to judge the 2008 AIA Dallas Design Awards. This is the 41st annual competition, one of the nation's largest, to be sponsored by the Dallas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

Shannon Kraus, AIA, of HKS, chairs this year's competition, which has drawn 116 entries from Dallas architectural firms. Entries include built and unbuilt projects designed for both DFW-area and worldwide clients.

Jurors for the Built Project Awards include:

Thom Mayne, FAIA—Architect for the city's new Museum of Nature and Science, Mayne chairs the panel of jurors for the Built Project category. He is founder and principal of the California firm Morphosis and winner of the 2005 Pritzker Architecture Prize, the profession's highest honor.

Rick Clarke, AIA, LEED AP—Award winning architect for Dallas' Federal Reserve Bank, Clark is a design principal with the New York and Washington, D.C. offices of Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Architects.

James McGrath—Partner with London-based Foster + Partners, McGrath is designing Dallas' new Winspear Opera House.

Jurors for the Unbuilt Project Awards are:

Victoria Meyers, AIA—Chair of the Unbuilt Project jury, Meyers is a partner in New York's HanrahanMeyers Architects and designer of Dallas' "See-Thru House" built by Urban Edge Developers.

Dr. Andres Lepik—A native of Germany, Lepik joined the New York Museum of Modern Art in 2007 as curator of architecture and design.

Edward Keegan, AIA —Editor-at-large for Architect magazine and a contributing editor for Chicago Architect, Keegan is a widely-known architectural critic, educator, and strong advocate for Chicago's unique architectural legacy.

Award winners will be announced Thursday, Sept. 18, in open-air ceremonies at AT&T Plaza at Victory Park. The public is invited to attend the 7-10 p.m. event, which will be emceed by WFAA-TV "Good Morning Texas" host Gary Cogill. Thom Powell, AIA, of Good Farrell & Fulton Architects, directs the event.
