The year 1938 was the height of the art deco era when cabaret, jazz and blues infused music in America. It was also the year an exciting crop of composers, who would later emerge on the American classical music scene, were born. Experience the playful juxtaposition of songs written in 1938 alongside songs created by composers celebrating their 70th birthdays this year.

Highlights: Songs by Duke Ellington, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, William Bolcom, Henry Cowell, and David del Tredici as well as Samuel Barber’s Opus 13, Simon Sargon’s Patterns in Blue and John Corigliano’s epic Mr. Tambourine Man: Songs of Bob Dylan.

Extras: Pre-concert lecture by Martha Gerhart, renowned vocal coach/pianist and translator, and currently Adjunct Faculty at SMU’s Meadows School of the Arts; Photo exhibition of Dallas art-deco gem Fair Park by local photographer Frank Lopez; and post-concert reception. The photos will be on view the week preceding the event.
