Lecture: Visions of Prophecy in Etruscan, Greek and Roman Art

Dr. Nancy de Grummond, M. Lynette Thompson Professor of Classics, Florida State University

This lecture will explore images of acts of prophecy in Etruscan, Greek and Roman religious art. Ancient rituals of divination in Italy and Greece required certain gestures, postures, instruments and personnel, and these can be analyzed and organized to show a complete vocabulary of iconography utilized to depict oracles and prophecies. There are special ways to represent and identify the seer, his or her assistants, and the ones who come to consult the prophet or oracle. The methods of divination discussed include haruspication (the reading of animal entrails, especially livers), augury from the actions of birds, and the consultation of reflections in mirrors and liquids. Free; advanced registration is not required. Please call 214.4677 for more information.
