Originally commissioned by Rodgers and Hammerstein, The Tender Land is a testament to the beauty and power of Aaron Copland’s unpretentious American sensibility and musical voice. The music, redolent of Appalachian Spring, is full of traditional melodies, jazz elements, and folk songs that evoke the simplicity and spirit of rural America. The story is set on a small farm in the Midwest during the Great Depression at the time of spring harvest, and it centers on a young girl, Laurie Moss. When two drifters unexpectedly show up, on the eve of her graduation from high school, Laurie’s world and all that lies ahead is forever changed. Sung in English in a fully staged production and performed in Murry Sidlin’s haunting chamber orchestra version, Copland’s only full-length opera is an enduring story about the promise of love, the promise of living, and the unpredictable nature of life’s endings and beginnings.

Written by Aaron Copland. Directed by Hank Hammett.
