“Feeding the Builders of the Pyramids”
February 21
During the 4th Dynasty Egyptians built the Giza pyramids, a massive undertaking requiring thousands of conscripted laborers and vast numbers of skilled craftsman, clerks, overseers, and administrators, as well as a veritable army of people to support the construction teams. To house this labor force and the “backroom” operations, Egyptians established a large settlement just south of the pyramids near the edge of the flood plain. Since 1988, Ancient Egypt Research Associates has been carrying out excavations here under the direction of Mark Lehner. The goal has been to learn about the social and economic infrastructure that supported pyramid-building.
