Meadows Museum Symposium: Learning from the Past, Partnering for the Future

Our understanding about past cultures is based upon research achieved through ambitious, long-term collaboration among universities and museums. Join us at this symposium where university professors will speak about three such collaborations that contribute to our knowledge about ancient cultures: Poggio Colla and the Murlo Project (in the Mugello Valley of Tuscany) through which we have gained a wealth of information about Etruscan civilization; and the Oplontis Project outside of Naples which continues to provide insight about the ancient Romans. In the afternoon session, museum professionals will join the panel of speakers to discuss possibilities for, and challenges of, future collaborations that advance scholarship and cultural understanding.

$15 per person; $10 for Meadows Museum members; free for SMU students. Cost includes a buffet lunch.

For reservations or additional information, contact Museum Education Coordinator Tamytha Smith at 214-768-2740, or email Tamytha@smu.edu.

The panel of speakers will include Professor Erik Nielsen of Franklin College, Professors John Clarke and Michael Thomas from The University of Texas, Professor Thomas Noble Howe of Southwestern University, Dr. Claire Lyons, Curator of Antiquities at the J. Paul Getty Museum, and SMU University Distinguished Professor of Art History Greg Warden. Dr.

Fulvia Lo Schiavo, Archaeological Superintendent for Tuscany, will join the speakers for the afternoon panel discussion. This symposium is presented in conjunction with the opening of the exhibition "From the Temple and the Tomb: Etruscan Treasures from Tuscany." Reservation required by January 22.
