Daughters of Eve: Masculine Virtue and Feminine Vice in Renaissance Women
March 25
In Renaissance Italy, conventional wisdom assigned certain virtues to men and others to women. Writers and artists alike were fascinated by examples of what they saw as gender reversals. Perhaps surprisingly to modern audiences, a vice that was frequently associated with women was sexual promiscuity. In this free lecture, Bohn will offer examples in Renaissance art where women corrupted honorable men with sexual temptation.
An expert on Bolognese art, Bohn is the author of Ludovico Carracci and the Art of Drawing (2004) and numerous other publications. Most recently, she curated and wrote the catalogue for the exhibition Le “Stanze” di Guido Reni: Disegni del maestro e della scuola at the Uffizi, Florence (March 14–June 1, 2008).
