Lecture: “Marriage in the Renaissance: What’s Love Got to Do with It?”
May 1
Beverly Louise Brown, an independent scholar based in London, will present a free lecture titled “Marriage in the Renaissance: What’s Love Got to Do with It?”
In her lecture, Brown will explore marriage customs and attitudes toward love in Renaissance Italy through the examination of meaningful details in various secular paintings and portraits, especially works by the Venetian masters Titian and Lorenzo Lotto.
An expert on Italian Renaissance and Baroque art, Brown has curated and edited the catalogues for a number of acclaimed exhibitions, including The Genius of Rome: 1592–1623 at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, 2005, and Renaissance Venice and the North: Crosscurrents in the Time of Bellini, Dürer, and Titian at the Palazzo Grassi, Venice, 1999. At the Kimbell Art Museum, where she was curator from 1990 to 1995, she organized exhibitions on Jacopo Bassano and on the oil sketches of Giambattista Tiepolo.
