Ride of Silence

May 20 , 2009

7 PM

to 8 PM

White Rock Lake

8300 Garland Drive, Dallas

Age Limit

N/A

The Ride of Silence started in 2003 at White Rock Lake in Dallas as 1,000 gathered to remember bicyclist Larry Schwartz, who was killed by a school bus mirror. Since then, the annual, slow-paced, sunset ride has grown to include events in all 50 states and 18 countries worldwideto honor bicyclists who have been injured or killed.

Meet in the parking lot on W. Lawther between Fisher and Branchfield. Because parking is limited, cyclists are encouraged to arrive by bicycle.

Thanks for posting. The map shown is of East Lawther but the ride actually starts on West Lawther (<a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&amp;source=s_d&amp;saddr=&amp;daddr=32.833969,-96.729341&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;mra=mi&amp;mrsp=0&amp;sz=16&amp;sll=32.834795,-96.731486&amp;sspn=0.010529,0.022745&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;z=16">Google Map here</a>).

Just spoke to Ride of Silence founder Chris Phelan. Dallas parks and recreation and police want to be paid to protect tonight's riders. Without it, the ride will technically be "cancelled" - however, bagpipes will still play Amazing Grace at 7pm. Citing the Constitutional freedom of assembly, cyclists who wish to pedal slowly and silently are wholeheartedly encouraged to do so - however, the park gates will not be opened (so be careful).

Way to make us proud, once again, City of Dallas...Has this been an issue in previous years?

Travis Bush says:

So DPD wants the public to support them more and have us foot the bill for more officers so we can be "safer", but wanna get greedy when it comes to doing the community a service? Just makes you shake your head.

And Parks and Rec can't spare what maybe two or four people to open and close the gates? What a joke.

If the city provided bike lanes, it wouldn't be such a massive drain on their resources.

I'm not even going to mention that DPD could definitely use the good press. Oops!

Good news! The ride was not canceled and police provided protection for the riders! More at the <a href="http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/news/city/dallas/stories/052009dnmetrideofsilence.21d243c2.html#">DMN</a>. It was a beautiful night for a ride, though inexplicably attendance seemed much lower than in the past couple of years.

Technically, bike lanes themselves are a pretty big drain on resources.
