Dia de la Guitarra (Day of the Guitar)

The festival will kick off with James Schreffler’s Children’s Spring Guitar recital in F112.
At 11:15 a.m. in F117, Valerie Hartzell, prizewinner in numerous international competitions, will perform. Hartzell studied at the Peabody Conservatory with Manuel Barrueco and is the director of the Classical Minds Guitar Institute and Competition at University of Houston. The selections will play are by Francisco Tarrega, Manuel Ponce, Agustín Barrios Mangoré, and Roland Dyens.
Steve Howell, a graduate of the University of North Texas College of Music, will present a lecture on Guitar in the High School at 1:30 p.m. in F117. Mr. Howell will present an overview of the Garland High School guitar program, featuring a short video and a performance excerpt from department concerts.
Following Howell’s lecture, Hartzell will give a Master Class at 3 p.m. and the festival will wrap up at 5 p.m.
