Dr. Elders became the first African American and the second woman to hold the post of Surgeon General. In that role, she initiated programs to combat teen pregnancy and to increase childhood immunizations. She remains an influential advocate for prenatal care, women’s health and current treatments for HIV/AIDS. As the distinguished lecturer for the 2009 Raggio Lecture Series, she will address the present and future state of women’s healthcare in America.
