Opening the program with the first set will be The Sammons Jazz Ensemble led by Artistic Director James Gilyard on bass, Robert Aberg on guitar, Shelley Carrol on sax/flute, Simone Rogers on vocals and Andrew Griffith on drums. In the second set, featured guest artist Monty Alexander will be accompanied by The Sammons Jazz Ensemble.

The concert is Wednesday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m. and is the fourth presentation of the Spring 2010 Sammons Jazz series. The evening features the best live jazz entertainment as well as free valet parking, complimentary coffee, wine, beer, soft drinks, and light appetizers. Seating is general admission. Regular ticket price is $35; Member price is $30. All performances are in Meadows Hall at the Sammons Center for the Arts, 3630 Harry Hines at Oak Lawn. All performances are on Wednesdays from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.; doors open at 7:00 p.m. Dress is casual and all major credit cards are accepted. For tickets call 214/520-7789.

In a career spanning five decades, pianist Monty Alexander has built a reputation exploring and bridging the worlds of American jazz, popular song, and the music of his native Jamaica. In the process, he has performed and recorded with artists from every corner of the musical universe and entertainment world: Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Quincy Jones, Barbara Hendricks, Bill Cosby, and Bobby McFerrin, among others. Monty is a legend in the jazz world and this concert promises to be an unforgettable experience.
