Late Night at the DMA: Spring Break

Join us for our annual Spring Break Block Party and follow the yellow brick road to the DMA as we celebrate the timeless classic The Wizard of Oz with treasure hunts, readings, music, family activities, and more. Stay late for the Insomniac Tour, films, and a performance by The Beaten Sea. The Crow Collection of Asian Art and Nasher Sculpture Center will also be open until midnight.

Midnight Masquerade Badge: March - DMA Friends, come to Late Night dressed as your favorite Wizard of Oz character to earn the Midnight Masquerade Badge and 450 points. This limited-time badge is available for the March 15, 2013, Late Night; ask DMA staff for the code when you arrive. If you are not a DMA Friend, you can sign up at the kiosks near the Visitor Services Desks when you arrive.

Happy Hour Performance featuring the New Trier High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble - 6:00 p.m., Atrium. Coming from the northern suburbs of Chicago, the New Trier High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble will perform their selection of vocal jazz favorites and exciting contemporary arrangements. Under the direction of Nathan Landes, the ensemble has garnered multiple awards and achievements, including the National Grammy Signature School Award and an Honorary Recognition Award for an entry for the theme song for the 2008 Winter Olympics in Beijing.

Tom & Jerry and The Wizard of Oz (2011) - 6:00 p.m., C3 Theater. Tom and Jerry soar over the rainbow and down the yellow brick road for a new adventure in the land of Oz! To get safely back home to Kansas, the pair will face a twister, go paw-to-paw against flying monkeys, and storm the Wicked Witch’s castle to save Dorothy and Toto and get them all back where they belong—because there’s no place like home! This film is not rated. (59 min.)

Journey Through Oz Family Adventure - 6:00-9:00 p.m., Center for Creative Connections (C3)/Museum Galleries. We’re off to see the wizard in a family adventure through the Museum galleries. Pick up your guide in the Center for Creative Connections, visit four activity stations in the galleries, and earn an I’m a DMA Wiz! button. You’ll help the Scarecrow get a brain, the Tin Man gain a heart, the Cowardly Lion find some courage, and Dorothy return home. There’s no place like the DMA! Last adventure guide will be handed out at 8:30 p.m.

Late Night Creations - 6:00–10:00 p.m., Art Studio, C3. Learn how to make your own pop-ups and use them to create fantastic paper sculptures based on works in the DMA’s collection. Stop in at any time, but in-depth fifteen-minute tutorials will be given at 6:00, 7:00, 8:00, and 9:00 p.m. All materials are included, and all ages are welcome.

Wizard of Oz Photo Station - 6:00-11:30 p.m., Level 1. Take your photo in front of our Emerald City backdrop with cardboard cut-out characters from The Wizard of Oz.

Book Signing with Robert Sabuda - 6:30-7:00 p.m., Museum Store. Robert Sabuda, pop-up artist and author, will sign his books outside the Museum Store before his talk at 8:30 p.m. There will also be a book signing after the talk.

Fresh Ink: Peter Reynolds - 7:00 p.m., Horchow Auditorium. Pick up your tickets at the Will Call table in front of Horchow Auditorium beginning at 6:00 p.m. Peter Reynolds is a New York Times bestselling author and illustrator and supporter of creativity, encouraging even the most unimaginative readers to take a chance and believe in their unique abilities. In his latest book, The Museum, Reynolds teams up with author Susan Verde to celebrate the inspiration that comes from visiting a museum.

Progressive Museum Tour - 7:00 p.m., Meet at the Admissions Desk, Nasher Sculpture Center. Join staff from the Dallas Museum of Art, Crow Collection of Asian Art, and Nasher Sculpture Center for a traveling tour of highlights from all three art museums.

Twitter Scavenger Hunt - 7:00 p.m. There will be one tweet every thirty minutes (four tweets total) with the hashtag #ArtHunt providing a clue on how to find a work of art or location. Grab a token at each location; be the first to find all four works of art, and you could win a prize!

Yoga for Kids - 7:00–7:30 p.m., C3. Join our resident yogini, BKS Studio Instructor Becky Hines, RYT, for meditation, relaxation, and some very pretzel-like poses.

DMA Partners Lounge at Late Nights - 7:00–10:00 p.m., Cook Family Boardroom, Level M2. Stop by and enjoy snacks, games, and puzzles while relaxing with other DMA Partners.

Late Night Art Bytes: GIF Animation, Dots Over the Rainbow - 7:00-9:00 p.m., Tech Lab, C3. Learn how to create your own GIF Animation in this beginner’s drop-in workshop. Local artist will be on hand to help you draw inspiration from Peter Reynolds’ The Dot. Where will your rainbow colored dots take you?

Bedtime Stories with Arturo - 7:30 p.m., C3 Theater. Kids, wear your pajamas and bring your pillows to hear bedtime stories told by storyteller Ann Marie Newman.

Late Night Main Stage featuring Resounding Harmony - 8:00 p.m., Atrium. Resounding Harmony, a Dallas-based community chorus, will perform a concert of childhood and family favorites, including selections from The Wizard of Oz and Wicked.

Fresh Ink: Robert Sabuda - 8:30 p.m., Horchow Auditorium and C3 Theater. Pick up your tickets at the Will Call table in front of Horchow Auditorium beginning at 6:00 p.m. Hailed as the "Prince of Pop-Ups," Robert Sabuda orchestrates major feats of paper engineering in his quest to bring literary classics to life in a new way. His book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a beautiful celebration of one of the greatest children's stories of all time and features amazing pop-ups, including a stunning Emerald City centerfold, a melting Wicked Witch, and the fantastic sight of the humbug wizard floating away in his shiny green, gold, and blue hot-air balloon. A book signing will follow the event.

Flora Street Performance - 8:30 p.m., Flora Street. Enjoy a performance with Dallas singer-songwriter Madison King that blends blues, rock, and pop music. King was nominated by the Dallas Observer for two Music Awards in 2011, Best Solo Act and Best Female Vocalist.

Late Night After Hours Music Showcase featuring The Beaten Sea - 10:00 p.m., Atrium. The Beaten Sea, a group formed in Dallas, performs a mix of folk, alt-country, and old-time music to create a sound that is beautiful and unforgettable.

The Muppet’s Wizard of Oz (2005) - 10:00 p.m., C3 Theater. Dorothy, an aspiring singer with dreams of fame and fortune, is swept away to the magical land of Oz, where she meets the Wizard, who promises to make her a superstar—but only if she and her new friends, the Scarecrow, the Tin Thing, and the Cowardly Lion, can defeat Oz’s #1 diabolical diva, the Wicked Witch of the West! This film is rated PG. (100 min.)

Return to Oz (1985) - 10:00 p.m., Horchow Auditorium. Months after returning from Oz, Dorothy still cannot sleep and goes on about imaginary friends and places until Aunt Em decides she must see a doctor. Escaping the hospital, Dorothy awakes back in Oz with a new friend and a new challenge: save the Scarecrow from the evil Nome King, who has found her ruby slippers and used them to lay waste to the Emerald City and take over Oz. This film is rated PG. (113 min.)

Creativity Challenge - 10:00 p.m., Level 3, Decorative Arts Gallery. Teams can sign up at the C3 entrance at 9:30 p.m.; limited to the first ten teams. Gather your team together to travel the DMA’s yellow brick road in this magical challenge. Tap your heels together three times, and think to yourself "There's no place like home. There's no place like home." Your creations must be very magical to impress our special guest judge, Robert Sabuda!

Insomniac Tour: Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My! - 10:30 p.m., Meet at the main Visitor Services Desk. Join McDermott Intern Emily Brown for a tour until the wee hours of the night! We will look at three works of art that symbolize bravery, truth, and magic in Africa, Japan, and America. Come and see how the DMA’s own lion, tiger, and bear compare to the lovable characters in The Wizard of Oz.

Freddy's Frozen Custard

I asked what a Steakburger is and the friendly staff stated "it is a very high grade of lean beef that is hand-crafted" thin on the edges and thicker in the middle. This makes for carmelization on the edges and a juicy center. The Hawaiian is a must eat on the custard menu. I will definitely be bringing my friends!
