Face and Form: Modern and Contemporary Sculpture in the Meadows Collection
Next date:
December 9
Start date: Wednesday, October 7, 2009
Event is ongoing: Indefinitely
This exhibition highlights the Meadows Museum’s distinguished collection of modern and contemporary sculpture from the 19th to the 21st centuries. The foundation for these holdings was established in the late 1960s and early 1970s with works by such artists as Rodin, Maillol, Lipchitz, Marini, Moore, Oldenburg and Smith, given to SMU by museum founder Algur H. Meadows for the establishment of an outdoor sculpture garden in honor of his second wife, Elizabeth. Since then the museum has added to its permanent collection of sculpture with such major acquisitions as Wave (2001), the iconic kinetic sculpture by Spanish artist and architect Santiago Calatrava, as well as works by fellow countrymen including Rueda, Corberó and Zapata. This year, the Meadows is pleased to announce its acquisition of a monumental contemporary sculpture by Barcelona native Jaume Plensa (b. 1955) entitled Sho (2007). The Meadows sculpture collection will be featured in the museum’s newly redesigned entry plaza and in the Jake and Nancy Hamon Galleries.
