Dallas artist Aralyn McGregor has an exhibition of new works at the Magnolia Gallery, located inside the Magnolia Theatre in the West Village in Dallas from June 21st – September 19th, 2012. The reception is Thursday, June 21st, from 8-11 PM. Admission to the reception is free and the art is available for viewing or purchase during regular theatre hours.
For this exhibition, each painting is displayed with the poem that served as its’ catalyst. All of the paintings were inspired by Sylvia Plath’s poems.
“I know that I’m not good at reading poetry. For a long time, I found it too intimidating or just obsolete. Whenever I compare my interpretation with the expert analysis, I’m almost always completely off. I never seem to make all the correct connections and insights on my own. All the same, I find that Plath’s poems are full of incredibly beautiful metaphors and juxtapositions. What comes to mind while reading her work is vivid enough to want to put it down on canvas. Whether or not it’s “correct” doesn’t really matter. They’re not meant to be illustrations. Ideally, the paintings stand by themselves, without titles or explanation. However, most people want the story behind the art, so I thought I’d make the process visible for this show. This is how I find inspiration. Poetry is my muse.” – Aralyn McGregor
