Concentrations 50: Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla
Start date: Monday, December 4, 2006
Event is ongoing: Until Sunday, February 18, 2007
Created by the artistic team of Jennifer Allora (b. 1974) and Guillermo Calzadilla (b. 1972), the videos Under Discussion (2005) and Amphibious (Login-Logout) (2005) explore the nature of place as a way of opening up discussion about contemporary issues such as colonialism, development, and globalization. Under Discussion takes up the uncertain status of the Puerto Rican island of Vieques, while Amphibious (Login-Logout), filmed along the banks of the Pearl River Delta in China, follows the path of six turtles as they float slowly downstream on a log, taking in the sights and sounds of what has now become one of the most important industrial centers in the world. Both films offer up a considered visual meditation on the intersection of culture and nature, tradition and progress, and history and geography. Presented without direction or comment, ongoing changes and transformations of the landscape and its inhabitants are quietly and subtly revealed, allowing the audience to draw their own conclusions about the complicated issues raised by these films.
