the Wheeler Brothers and the annual Ulterior Motifs: A Celebratory Art Extravaganza. This exhibition was a success when it started in Lubbock in 1999 and has only gotten bigger and better, enjoying an almost cult-like following. They returned to Lubbock at Wheeler Bro’s Studios and the Buddy Holly Center for Ulterior Motifs #9, and low and behold, “they closed down the streets, had bands outside and over 700 people showed up.” (Jeffrey Wheeler) Who knows what to expect when Ulterior Motifs: No. 10 hits Arlington, but it should be a good time.
The Arlington Museum of Art is pleased to present Ulterior Motifs No. 10: A Celebratory Art Extravaganza, organized and curated by the Wheeler Brothers of Lubbock, Texas. If that’s not enough, we are happy to announce that the museum is collaborating on a double bill of this mad-capped show with Gerald Peters Gallery in Dallas, Texas where Ulterior Motifs No. 11 will be on exhibit.
Wheeler Bro’s Studios began Ulterior Motifs in an effort to enlighten our community about the art of Texas, celebrate our cultural heritage and educate people to the social, political and ethical issues of contemporary Texas life. This spirited and colorful exhibition began in Lubbock in 1999 and has grown rapidly in popularity. Each year, this show travels to a different part of Texas from “the middle of nowhere to thriving art communities” and expanding new minds. And each year the show continues to get stronger quality work. The diversity of this group of artists’ works range from the ridiculous to the sublime, yet manages to capture the essence of the heart and soul of Texas. Viewers can expect to see a visual feast for the eyes--both irreverent and challenging, new and familiar.
