A Tribute to Texas Art: The Gift of William J. Hill
Start date: Sunday, July 15, 2007
Event is ongoing: Until Sunday, October 14, 2007
SMU’s University Art Collection at the Meadows Museum, whose holdings include major examples from the Texas Regionalists, has recently been blessed with a generous gift of more than 15 works by Texas artists from Houston collector William J. Hill. From North Texas artists such as Julie Bozzi and Vernon Fisher, to artists who have been affiliated with SMU as either students or professors such as Barnaby Fitzgerald, John Alexander and James Surls, this exhibition displays a breadth of styles and media, including paintings, works on paper and sculpture. Houston-area artists Lucas Johnson and Jim Love are also included, as well as Austin’s Bob “Daddio” Wade, Corpus Christi sculptor Jesús Moroles, and the recently deceased Luis Jiménez of El Paso. This show will serve as a prelude to two exhibitions at the Meadows Museum in November 2007 devoted to Jerry Bywaters, another Texas artist whose work is well represented in the University Art Collection.
