Description
Jerry Bywaters (1906-1989) reshaped the Texas art world and won national recognition for Texas artists. Now, following the centennial of his birth, the Meadows Museum presents two exhibitions celebrating his artistic achievements as painter and printmaker. These two shows have been organized by the Meadows Museum in collaboration with the Jerry Bywaters Collection on Art of the Southwest at SMU and have been made possible thanks to a gift of The Meadows Foundation.
From stunning landscapes and murals to intimate genre scenes and captivating portraits, this selection of more than 40 color works by Bywaters and its associated catalogue focuses on a lifetime spent participating in and studying the cultural life of the American Southwest. It will be the most comprehensive retrospective of Bywaters' work and the most extensive study of his life in more than a decade. This exhibition and its accompanying publication marks the first time Bywaters' 13-year printmaking output has been codified, with all 39 prints displayed together, tracing the history of his important role in the development of Texas printmaking during the early part of the 20th century.
