Description

Scattered paint droplets stack up and fashion intriguing little piles and hybrid forms in the work of Charlotte Smith. When these three-dimensional circles, colors, and shadows meet one another, an innate visual energy is generated. A variety of approaches and new compositions materialize in this body of work as Smith plays with a new palette and further refines her drop-making technique. Reminiscent of her early work, Smith paints large canvases of low-relief droplets bubbling up in hourglass configurations. In other works, high-relief piles amass in bold colors. Simultaneously, Smith challenges the margins by arranging her three-dimensional droplets on the borders of her two-dimensional surfaces. An even more sculptural approach materializes in Smith's newest works as piles build up on three-dimensional surfaces.

Receiving her MFA in painting and drawing from the University of North Texas in 1999, Smith has rapidly established herself as a premier Texan contemporary artist. Since her first solo show at Pan American in 2004, Smith was selected for the First Texas Biennial and collected by Neiman Marcus for three stores. Smith also had her first solo museum show at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas, adding one of her works to their permanent collection in 2005. In the past year, Smith has also exhibited with the Arlington Museum of Art, George Billis Gallery in Los Angeles, and Anya Tish Gallery in Houston.
