Description
The Fort Worth Weavers' Guild presents a month-long exhibit of textiles in various forms, from wearable art to rungs, blankets and decorative art. “Textiles, Textures and Treasures” will feature a wide variety of items woven in the past two years by the more than 60 Guild members from the greater Fort Worth area, some of whom have been weaving for over 50 years. The Guild expects to display more than 75 articles in September. According to Guild President Margaret Arafat, “Weaving is an ancient craft that encompasses the functional and aesthetic. Today’s weavers use traditional and modern fibre and techniques to practice this ancient, universal art form from a contemporary point of view. The pieces on exhibit in “Textiles, Textures and Treasures” range from the deceptively simple to the obviously complex, and exemplify the diversity that is the weaving world today.” There will also be a sale of Guild members’ handwoven pieces on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 10 a.m. – 9 p.m., and a reception from 5 – 9 p.m. the same day, in conjunction with Fall Gallery Night activities sponsored by the Fort Worth Art Dealers Association. Founded in 1955 by five Fort Worth weavers, the Guild’s mission is to sponsor a regular time when fiber artists can come together to share techniques and sources, to mentor new members and weavers, and to promote excellence in the ancient art of weaving. The 50th anniversary show in 2005 displayed more than 70 creative pieces, from hand-dyed silk scarves, linen fingertip towels, an amulet made from hemp, cardboard, bead and charms, to a basket woven from silk neckties and rope and a hand-dyed wool rug.
