Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art
Start date: Saturday, August 30, 2008
Event is ongoing: Until Saturday, January 3, 2009
Storm Water Management’s media campaign was originally developed in 2005 as part of a citywide media campaign to educate the general public on storm water issues. The exhibition provides general information on storm water pollution and gives tips on how to prevent contamination in our waterways. In addition, the exhibition highlights pollution effects in three areas: herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers; used oil and toxic materials; and illicit discharges. The primary goal of this display is to make people aware of the everyday behaviors that can have an impact on the health of local creeks, lakes, and rivers.
This year, the City of Dallas and Storm Water Management have created a new approach to their annual advertising campaign. Beyond Green: Toward a Sustainable Art is also new and is the title of this current artistic, graphic exhibition. The display presented at the White Rock Lake Museum (housed inside the Bath House Cultural Center) will feature works of art used in the campaign to impart an important environmental message. The message of the display will focus on educating the public through beautiful and compelling images. One aspect of the message teaches that storm water is rainwater that has not been treated as it is discharged directly into our bodies of water, such as White Rock Lake.
In addition to the graphic displays, Storm Water will also present a detailed map of the major watersheds of Texas and the Dallas White Rock storm drainage system. After this experience, the public most likely will never look at storm water the same way!
Previous exhibitions created by Storm Water Management have been successfully presented at the Dallas Aquarium at Fair Park, Dallas City Hall, Dallas Zoo, and the Museum of Nature and Science, among others.
The exhibition was curated in part by Richard Smart, Frank Hamilton and Sandra Mitchell Obregon from the City of Dallas Storm Water Management office. For further details about Storm Water Management and its outreach programs, please visit http://www.wheredoesitgo.com
