Adios, Deep Ellum tunnel

Reports CBS 11 TV:

It’s the last days for a Dallas landmark. The eclectic tunnel that connects downtown to Deep Ellum will soon be demolished to make way for a new DART Rail Station.

For some the rail station will be a welcomed site, but critics say the City of Dallas is once again tearing down its history.

For decades the tunnel has provided an eclectic passage way. One resident said, “Well there's something about that ‘popping up’. You're in Deep Ellum. You're in a different neighborhood."

Built in 1930, many see the Deep Ellum Tunnel as a timeless landmark. The tunnel was even featured in an ad campaign spot lighting Dallas to the nation.

“–Because it's such a gateway to the neighborhood. It's a unique architectural feature that has evolved over the years,” said Mark Sonna, Mark & Larry's Stuff.

Next week the tunnel, and its well-known murals, will be demolished to make way for a new DART Rail Station.

Check out the Dallas Business Journal from June 16 for more detail, such as: "With such a high concentration of nightclubs, crime is an issue at night, residents say. Small businesses and art galleries are starting to move into vacant office spaces, and the lunch hour is busier than before. But daytime sidewalks still can't be described as bustling."

"The hope is that will change with the 10-mile southeast corridor light rail extension from downtown to Buckner Boulevard. Construction is set to start this summer. The Deep Ellum station, one of eight on a $250 million line, will be completed in 2009, DART officials say."

Oh man.

See, I realize that it's gonna be nice to have a DART rail station there (as long as it runs past 2AM), but good Lord, do they have to put it THERE?? I mean, seriously. If you follow the line, where you can kinda tell they want to put the actual tracks, there's so many spots to put it, besides that tunnel.

Like Club Envy. Put it on top of that heap.

sometimes i don't get these morons in Dallas they just do stuff just to be doing stuff just for the hell of doing it. This city has no respect for landmarks and they wont everything all new and futuristic kinda sterile to me if you think about it. Next they gone wont the reunion ball to be square and remove it........ And damn Fantasia can't act

Peace

pS: keep the gotdamn tunnel we did a video there back in the 90's and it's historical to me....
