Mista Long puts emphasis on soulful grassroots lyrics

Recently, local hip-hop artist Mista Long began previewing three new tracks on his MySpace page. TexasGigs asked Mista Long to tell us a little bit about the new songs - here is what he had to say:

Yeh the new songs are a more soulful grassroots style of lyric that I'm delivering to the people. I wanted to dig a little deeper into the stories and experiences of my past and share more thoughts and feelings with the listeners that my party/club songs weren't sharing. These new songs still make you wanna dance and ride but they're more detailed so that people hear in depth info about my life. I'm connecting with people through these new songs.

"Like It Or Not" is my anthem and my stand for the SOUTH as a whole. It has an old school rugged beat to it like the old songs from 84-87. It has more drums and snares than other sounds. It's my stand against the people talking down on artists from the south because some of our music isn't full of metaphors and laced with heavy social subjects. It's my way of saying, "FUCK YOU CAUSE I'M PROUD TO BE FROM THE SOUTH!" We're as good as the rest of the country, if not better, as artists, so we don't wanna be shit on just because a few artists from the South choose to make music without meaning. This song is my stand for guys like me that are about lyrics, social issues, and still enjoy keeping the fun/partying in it so its not so bland. I AM southern hip hop and I'll rumble with the best of em if they think we're weak down here. It's a very bold and blatant song with the chopped and screwed chorus talking about candy paint, rims, and Chevys sitting high and saying LIKE IT OR NOT...lol. It's PUT IT IN YO FACE type music. The track was produced by my boy Big Al from Kansas City, MO. by way of Memphis, Tennessee.

"Need It Git It" is a connection song. It shouldn't be taken simply as a D-Boy song because the only dope I sell now is music. The reason I say it's a connection song is because it catches the ears of the guys still out there where I used to be doing what I used to do. They don't listen to the leaders, or the reporters, or even the police for the most part but some D-Boys are VERY intelligent and socially aware believe it or not. I didn't listen to people that weren't in the streets/dope game so I know first hand that I can only be accepted by those dudes if they see that I used to be who and where they are. It's a secret society mayne and they're checking for how real I am when I'm telling these stories. Once I've got em listening, I can reach and teach em, but if I can't get em to hear me then I'll lose them to the game. My cd's won't sell and I won't be helping anybody or serving any purpose if my messages don't reach em. D-Boys have there own social issues and this song expresses them and we connect that way. This one was produced by Dawgs Dabato.

"My Life" is a mixtape spin off of T.I.'s "Whatchu Know About That". It serves the same purpose as "Need It Git It". It's D-Boy talk but it's more expressive because I'm explainig some of the issues with being a D-Boy. Struggle is a part of the streets and when they hear this song they'll feel my pain because every street dude has had to deal with em. It ain't rose lense glasses type shit and they'll see my life and theirs in these lyrics.

I'm a street poet blessed to be born into the hip hop culture. My job ain't to raise these kids but I feel obligated to give em true life lessons to live by and thats what my new music is doing.

I'm finishing the last few songs for "Chronicles Of A Hustler" which is set to hit shelves late October or early November. "Hustle By My Lonely Vol 1" is set for the streets mid September. I just got picked up by ATV Records out of Austin, Texas for a 10 - 20 city tour across our great state. It starts September 19th and runs through October.

Alan I really appreciate the opportunity to tell the world about what I'm doing. This is a movement thats much bigger than me and it's a dream come true to be able to tell my story and reach and teach cats out here. I got nothin but love TexasGigs and the staff over there because you've shown me nothin but love and support from day one. ANYTIME or ANYTHING you need from me within my means is available for the asking without any thought to it. I'll stay in touch and thanks again.
