The Pawn Gallery Opens in Dallas

A new art gallery located at 2540 Elm Street in Deep Ellum will be celebrating its grand opening tonight at 7:00 pm. Via their MySpace page, the gallery explains its existence, name, and purpose:

We are here as a champion of the artist. Artists pawn their integrity, their self respect, their style in order to have a gallery to show their work. Then the creations are sold like a slab of meat at the butcher shop.

We are attempting to showcase the creators of the world and give them their due. Acknowledging the meaning of their efforts, sharing the joy, pain and effort they put into their creations. And have some fun along the way.

The night’s inaugural show is titled Interior Landscapes and features the work of Wafaa Bilal, originally from Iraq and currently living in Chicago, as well as artist C. (Christine) Taylor. The works will be supplemented by multimedia presentations, photography, and The Human Condition, Bilal’s coffee table book about coffee tables.

No, actually, Bilal describes his book as "a composite of photographs pulled together seamlessly so that they do not have identifiable primary sources."
