Colleyville Middle School Student Served as Mayor for a Day

— In a hotly contested election season, Canyon Inglasbe has found a way to take office without campaigning, politicking, or a single campaign contribution. The 11-year-old Colleyville Middle School student submitted the winning essay for Colleyville’s Mayor for a Day contest. He served his one-day term as mayor on Tuesday, November 7.

Mr. Inglasbe’s essay invoked the words of former president, Lyndon B. Johnson, in calling for an inclusive community that reaches out to others. His ideas ranged from increasing the commercial tax base to supporting programs and projects, such as G.R.A.C.E., shelters for victims of abuse, and Habitat for Humanity.

“I want Colleyville to be known for giving back to the people in Northeast Tarrant County who don’t have some of the resources that we do here, people less fortunate than us,” stated Canyon in his essay.

“Canyon is an outstanding young man and I believe this will be a great opportunity for him to further develop his leadership skills,” remarked Leslie Cowan, a counselor at Colleyville Middle School.

His interest in looking out for the needs of others comes naturally; his mother is a Colleyville police officer. And, in addition to excelling at school, golf, and serving on the student council, Canyon has spent much of his formative years working beside his mother at area charity events.

His day in the mayor’s role included tours of the Colleyville Justice Center and firehouses. He co-presided over the pre-council and council meetings with Mayor David Kelly.

Mayor David Kelly has championed the Mayor for a Day contest to allow young people the opportunity to experience city government and to foster a sense of community interest and involvement.
