St. Thomas Aquinas students experience theme-based education
St. Thomas faculty hopes to teach children through concepts and connections, not chunks.
Students at St. Thomas Aquinas School, are currently learning through a new education program that unites different subjects with a common theme. Lakewood People explains:
In religion class, [St. Thomas] students studied the Ten Commandments. In science, they mummified apples and made Egyptian makeup. In social studies, they learned about the lifestyles of the Egyptians. And in English, students learned to write their names in hieroglyphics.
The exercises were part of Walk Like an Egyptian Day for the sixth-grade class and marked the school’s kick-off of the second phase of implementing "integrated thematic instruction", or ITI, into its classrooms.
