Fort Worth ISD is the slacker, not the students
Excellent story in the S-T about how the ISD won't allow teachers to give really poor grades to really poor students. This resulted in part from a memo given to Handley Middle School teachers, the paper reported, that no "grades below 60 may be given on progress report” and “No student can be given an incomplete.”
Larry Shaw, executive director of the United Educators Association, tells the paper:
“If you don’t tell what the child is doing on that progress report, you’re lying to the parents and you are lying to the child. You’re telling them that they are progressing OK or at least making a 60 average, when really they need a kick in the butt.”

I teach in Fort Worth and it is a great school district with a lot of great things being offered. However,I see first hand these kids coming to class with no intention of doing a thing and will flat out tell you to your face, "you cannot give me any grade lower than a 60." Its ridiculous and the kids are not held accountable for their actions. Parents are being lied to and misled about the progress their child is making. I had eighth graders in my class last year that had no clue who Einstein was much less what he what he contributed to science. Kids are being passed on from one grade to the next regardless of the grades earned in that class. That, Mrs. South Carolina, is why most americans cannot find the US on a map.
