Sunnyvale first graders ‘read to succeed’

Sunnyvale first graders are working to make this saying a reality. On any given day, the students can be found exploring the pages of good books as they learn to read and develop their fluency and comprehension skills. They have been reading favorite old stories such as The Gingerbread Man, uncovering current events in the “Scholastic News”, and sharing good books with their reading buddies.

Now the first graders are using those skills to better understand a new science unit about solids and liquids. Each class has been divided into partnerships where students use hands on investigations to observe, describe, and compare the properties of solids. Then they communicate their ideas through writings and drawings in their personal science journals. By the end of the unit the students’ knowledge of specific properties of solids and liquids will increase, their vocabulary will be broader, and their communication and writing skills will become more sophisticated.

Learning does not stop in the classroom. Each week our students look forward to spending time in the computer lab with Mrs. Becky Fisher. Many of our activities are linked and extended through the appropriate use of the internet and other forms of technology. Sunnyvale first graders really are on the path to becoming confident future leaders, and we are so proud of them!Care Guidance and Management Program. Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings, they attend Sunnyvale Elementary first grade classes, assisting in daily activities.
