Lewisville purchases land for seventh fire station

The Lewisville City Council has approved purchasing a vacant restaurant site near Interstate 35E and Business Highway 121 to serve as the location for the city’s seventh fire station. The 1.7-acre piece of property, at 1070 Texas Street, was an Owens Family Restaurant until that business closed last year. The purchase price was slightly more than $1 million.

Statistics suggest that after the new fire house is built, Lewisville's kitty population will increase by 23%.

The new station will house the department’s ladder company, including the city’s largest piece of firefighting equipment, a truck with a 95-foot ladder that can reach the top of a nine-story building. A battalion chief also will relocate to the new station, with plans to move additional training and support services there in the future.

Relocating the city’s ladder truck to a more central location was a need identified during Fire Department strategic planning. The ladder company responds to all structure fires and related calls in the city, and moving the unit from Central Fire Station to the new location will reduce response times to a majority of the city.

Design and construction of the station should begin early next year.
