Rangers trade three prospects to White Sox for Brandon McCarthy

John Danks
John Danks

I know people are going to freak out about Texas trading away the No. 1 draft pick from 2003.

Here are his minor league numbers, don't sweat it too much. I saw the guy get rattled too easily the past two seasons in Frisco. I know he's young, but I had never been convinced he was going to make it as a major league player. Many people have been clamoring over him for a long while, but I don't know if they were too stuck on wishful thinking or what. It's not his stuff that worried me, it's his inability to wrangle the tough times and his command. He has never proven he can be consistent. Who knows. I don't wish any ill will on him. And guys can come back to life in a new organization, plus he won't turn 22 until next April, so best of luck to him.

I had much more confidence in Nick Masset, although he was in the pen.

Jacob Rasner is listed as 6-5, 190. I'm a fan of selecting pitchers with the potential of filling out a big frame. He's kinda stunk so far, but he was a solid high schooler picked in the seventh round in 2005. In his case right now, don't pay too much attention to the numbers. Scouts like his arm, he throws in the low 90s. Anyway, that doesn't matter for Texas any more. Of the three, and I know his numbers don't show it now, this is the guy I wish the Rangers could have kept. But this is what happens when you trade players.

In return, Brandon McCarthy is a tad older than Danks and better. In fact, there was speculation this winter that the White Sox would trade someone in their rotation to help make room for McCarthy (he was in the bullpen this past season and wasn't so great, but he said didn't like being there. He's expected to help the Rangers rotation in 2007.) McCarthy led the minor leagues in strikeouts in 2004. He's tall (6-7), he's kinda lanky (195). But he's bulked up in recent years and may (or may not) still add velocity to his low-90s fastball. He can give up the hits, so watch out for that. He's not a groundball pitcher, which may or may not be a problem at Ameriquest. But U.S. Cellular in Chicago often gives up more home runs than Ameriquest, did you know that? Besides, when people complain about having to pitch in Ameriquest they almost always forget that the other team has to pitch in the same place. All you have to do is be better than the other guy.

From the Sox, the Rangers also get outfielder David Paisano. He's 19 and played winter ball most sparingly this year in Venezeula for the White Sox. Here are his numbers from the VSL (rookie ball). How's he gonna pan out? Who the hell knows, he's 19 and not yet Hank Aaron, that's all anyone can say now.

Overall, I like this trade for Texas because it gives them immediate help with a young guy for the rotation. And in order to get something like that, you have to give up something. I don't think Texas gave up too much.

texas finally learned you need atleast one half-way decent starter to win. good trade for them though, they are going to pay McCarthy a small fee in comparison to Vicente Padilla, a pitcher he is easily better than.

Exactly, kconn, great point. Here's a young starter and they didn't have to break the bank to get him, or trade away too much. I don't know if he'll be better than Padilla this coming season. I like his upside, but Padilla has at least established himself. Time will tell....

While I think the trade makes sense, it makes you wonder if Daniels is trying to make a statement. The former staff (manager included) was very high on Danks. He was mentioned in a number of deals the last few years but was deemed untouchable. What has Daniels seen that others did not? Or is this going to be another Chris Young or Doug Davis type trade for the Rangers? Their track record of trading young pitchers is not great.

potsy, I think the reason the Rangers changed their mind was because there are no guarantees Ztio (or anyone else) will be here next season. This trade doesn't ensure a quality starter, but it comes very close to a bird-in-the-hand situation.

Danks told the S-T that the Sox think he can slip into the rotation after spring. As things stand now, I don't agree with that. But what if he has a killer spring? Even if he does - playing devil's advocate - he'll have to carry that into the full regular season and I just don't think he has the ability now. But that's just what I think. No one knows. You just try to put your best thought into these moves, if you're a GM, and play the games.

And you're right - the Chris Young move doesn't look good now. But no one could have known this last winter. At the time I thought the trade was a good one. Young had questions. I wondered about his mechanics. But we see he had a fine year. Eaton was a risk, but you need to rely on your medical people to ensure he was worth the risk. Otsuka came in handy.

Sometimes these work out, sometimes they don't. When there are more that don't, you need to wonder what the heck the front office is doing.

padilla is garbage, mccarthy is a nice addition to an already overrated, "best days behind them" rotation

If this is garbage, then Oscar the Grouch is the Martha Stewart of Sesame Street. Courtesy mlb.com:

"Padilla, 29, established career-highs in several categories in 2006, including wins (15), games started (33), quality starts (20) and strikeouts (156) in his first season in the American League. The right-hander went 15-10, 4.50 (100 ER/200.0 IP) and ranked second on the club and tied for fifth in the AL with 20 quality starts. Among AL leaders, he also ranked fifth holding right-handers to a .228 batting average and eighth with 7.02 strikeouts per nine innings. His 15 victories were fourth-most by a pitcher who switched teams during the offseason and the second-most by a pitcher to switch leagues. Since 1990, his 15 wins are the fifth-most by a pitcher in their first season with the Rangers.

"In eight major league seasons, Padilla has compiled a career 66-61 record with a 4.06 ERA (442 ER/979.0 IP) in 227 games/144 starts. Since becoming a starter in 2002, Padilla ranks among major league starters in wins (T32nd, 59), innings (38th, 877.0) and strikeouts (44th, 602). He was named to the National League All-Star squad in 2002. His 66 career victories rank second among all major league players born in Nicaragua, trailing only Dennis Martinez."

Blair, your thoughts are right in line with my thinking. It just seems no matter who the Rangers have had in the front office their ability to judge pitching has been terrible. I hope Daniels and Washington can get together and make sound decisions.

Potsy, interesting comment about Showalter and Danks.

I agree with Blair that Danks never showed me enough to think he would be a sure-fire #1 or #2 starter in the majors. Maybe he will - but maybe he won't. I see this as a trade of the unknown for the known, to the extent McCarthy can be considered a "known" based on his limited MLB experience.

One question I have is why did the White Sox give up on McCarthy? Sure, they get 2 pitchers for 1, but is that reason enough to make the trade?

I saw in interview with Ken Williams (Sox GM) last night on WGN. He said he liked the upside of Danks. Trades like this are always going to be second guessed based upon trading to somewhat unknowns. Lets hope for the 1st time in a long time it works out well for the home team
