RE: Helping the Residents of Ash Creek Mobile Home Park, 1802 Highland Road

This is to inform the neighbors and friends of the Ferguson Road Initiative (FRI) and White Rock Hills communities that after a year of litigation regarding code compliance issues, the landlord of Ash Creek Mobile Home Park (ACMHP) is closing the park and has evicted its residents. According to their eviction notice, they must move by February 9, 2007.

FRI remains committed to helping the residents of the park as they seek alternative housing during this difficult time. I know the members of the 20 Ferguson Road Initiative neighborhoods and 29 area faith communities are standing by for instructions on how ACMHP residents can be helped. Information gathered by the City of Dallas Crisis Intervention Team indicates the top needs for these residents are money for moving expenses. Here is how you can best help these folks, their families and their children:

Donate Money

You can donate money that will be used for alternative housing, moving expenses, utilities and other costs associated with the move. Make your tax deductible check out to the Ferguson Road Initiative (FRI) and indicate at the bottom of your check that it is earmarked for the Ash Creek Fund. Mail to:

Ferguson Road Initiative (Ash Creek Fund)

P.O. Box 570417

Dallas, Texas 75357-0417

One hundred percent of your donation will go to the residents of the ACMHP. FRI’s partner, the Wilkinson Center www.wilkinsoncenter.org will be our fiscal agent and will manage the distribution of these funds. Located at 5200 Bryan Street, the Wilkinson Center is a non profit whose mission is “to cooperate with people in need who desire to create a better life, so they may reach their God-given potential and sustain themselves with dignity.”

Donate Food and Clothing

You can donate food and clothing that families of the park can access by dropping off your donation to The White Rock Center of Hope located at 10021A Garland Road (Garland near Peavy) M-F 9 a.m.-2 p.m., 1st & 3rd Saturday of the month 9 a.m.-Noon, 2nd & 3rd Thursday evening 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. www.whiterockcenterofhope.org

I know that there are many who disagree with the characterization of eviction at the beginning, so let's agree to disagree there. (My .02 is that the description is accurate in terms of legal process, but oversimplifying the situation.)

The important thing is that there is an ongoing effort to help the residents of Ash Creek, one that I hope everyone in the community will support.

As an aside, last week's effort to provide a better Christmas for some of the Ash Creek residents was a resounding success. When I stopped by Marty Ray's house to deliver our modest contribution, I was thrilled to learn that all of the original requests were filled and then some. I was also pleased to learn that some of the donations had come from folks who learned about it on Pegasus News.

Marty and I had a good chat, and I'm hopeful that despite the heat and disagreement that has led up to the end of the park, everyone is focusing on how to help the residents in the short term and on how to improve the process the City follows in these situations in the future.

Mike lives in the White Rock Hills neighborhood and is a member of the Ferguson Road Initiative.
