On December 27, Farmers Branch city officials certified a petition aiming to repeal an ordinance that would ban apartment landlords from leasing to illegal immigrants.

This kind of hurts my eyes.

In order to have their petition certified, protesters needed a least 721 valid signatures. Altogether, they gathered at least 908.

Currently, the petition has been presented to the City Council, and the issue will be discussed on council agenda on Jan. 8, 2007.

Thereafter, the FB City Council can either move to repeal the ordinance, or they can leave it up to a vote by placing it on the May 12 municipal election ballot

The rental ordinance in question, which would make it illegal for apartment managers to rent to illegal aliens, has been deemed unconstitutional by some FB residents and has sparked an avalanche of litigation and finger-pointing on both sides.

UPDATE: Based on the petition, Farmers Branch officials are now considering delaying implementation of the ordinance until after a public election.
