The Weekly Mash

Club Clearview took out an ad in this week's Dallas Observer to respond to last week's attack.

Every week, TexasGigs rounds up the top music stories written around the metroplex so that you don't have to.

1) Club Clearview fires back at The Observer (The Dallas Observer) - Last week, Sam Machkovech argued that Club Clearview was responsible for killing Deep Ellum. This week, Club Clearview/Curtain Club/Liquid Lounge took out an ad in The Observer to respond.

From the Club Clearview ad

Within the last 8-10 months, Club Clearview, Curtain Club, and Liquid Lounge have hosted some of Dallas' most followed bands for many many GREAT shows including Dallas Observer 2006 Music Award winners (by popular vote): Chris Holt (Musician of the Year, Best Instrumentalist), Salim Nourallah (Best Album, Best Song, Best Producer), The Valentines (Best New Act), Hard Night's Day (Best Cover Band), Woodbelly (Best Funk/R&B), Mad Mexicans (Best Latin/Tejano), Fair To Midland (Best Metal), as well as SouthFM, Red Monroe, Downlo, Radiant, Neverset, Envoy, Edgewater, Bless The Broken, Rhythm, The Feds, Oddibe, Greatness In Tragedy, FFTN, Spoonfed Tribe, Shadow Reichenstein, Exit 380, Hardis, Flametrick Subs, Deaf Pedestrians, Vallejo, Advent, Kaylia, Joint Method, One Up, Darby, Early Pearl, Space Cadet, Hillbilly Orchestra, Hendrick, Somsara, Honchie, Flying Machine, Miser, Manditory, Cultura, Big Red Rooster, Panic Value, Jacknife, Add 9, Element 80, as well as a few road shows like Kittie, Social Burn, Cruiser Weight, Greenwheel, Paper Airline, The X's,....

The Dallas Observer music critic's article last week was not so much a slam on our clubs, but an insult to all of the aforementioned bands AND their fans. It was an open letter from a writer, with extraordinarily limited knowledge of the local music scene, telling music fans that their opinions are meaningless. We receive hundreds of demos every year and try to give many of them a chance. That's all any band wants, just a chance to get on stage and do what they love. Now, that being said, how many shows a band receives is determined by their talent and fan attendance. Our venues' concerts are among the best attended in the Metroplex because the listening public, not a booking agent nor a music critic determines a band's success. That principle applies all the way from the local level to national level. The staff of Club Clearview, The Curtain Club, and Liquid Lounge strives to treat the bands and their fans fairly and with respect, while promising to deliver top-notch production night after night. That's really all we can do. Give local bands a shot on a great sound system, treat them right, and let music fans decide. Whatever your favorite venue is, go there often. Don't let a worthless, meaningless, closeminded nobody critic tell you what to like.

2) MySpace agreement clause causes alarm (Guidelive) - Crayton Harrison takes a closer look at the MySpace user agreement and what it means to artists that post music on MySpace.

3) Listen Up - Janiva Magness: Do I Move You? (Fort Worth Weekly) - Tom Geddie reviews the most recent album from the 2006 Blues Music Award's female vocalist of the year.

4) On the way up (Guidelive) - Crayton Harrison reviews the recent Arctic Monkeys show at The Granada. He claims that the band is "rising above all the questions about whether they're the Next Great Hope of British rock, as some publications across the Atlantic are calling them."

5) Chaffin leaves TexasGigs (WFAA) - Hunter Hauk reports "Ms. Chaffin's new Web site, The Fine Line, will see a full launch on Saturday."

6) Spector 45: We Wanna Go (The Dallas Observer) - Darryl Smyers reviews the new Spector 45 album saying that "it's just this kind of sloppy cacophony that gave punk rock a good name to begin with"

7) The Sure Shot: 'Fool' snaps up serious spin (Quick) - This week, Skin's hip-hop column revolves around his sheer Mavs excitement.
