The following concert review was originally posted in the comments section by TexasGigs user "mharberg."
I went down to the Cavern Thursday, May 11 2006 to see The Jones Thing, after meeting Jeff Jones at one of Chris Holt's Wednesday Wheel Deal shows at Club Dada and at the recommendation of Amanda (of BocaTinta.com fame), but had the show stolen by a (really young) group of guys calling themselves JJ & The Rogues (not to take anything away from Jones Thing or Airline, the kids were just really good). More than one of the other artists from the other bands performing that night could be overheard complimenting JJ & The Rogues with an understated, "Wow, these guys rehearse," which I translated as "Wow, these guys are f*$king awesome!" Check these guys out on their Texasgigs.com page for their upcoming shows...they are not to be missed.
Airline / The Jones Thing / JJ & The Rogues
- When: Thursday, May 11, 2006, 10 p.m.
- Where: The Cavern, 1914 Greenville Avenue, Dallas
- Cost: $6
- Age limit: Not available
I hadn't heard a lick of music from the Jones Thing (except their 4 songs on myspace) before their set started at the Cavern. They opened with a rocking Sweet Simulacra (title track off their 2006 album) and played a very tight set. The highlight of their set (for me) was Be Cool, which I was lucky enough to catch on video. (look for it soon)
All apologies to Airline, I was only able to stay for their first couple of sings (however I did catch 1 on video). That was the 2nd time I took off before Airline finished their set (the first was Airline's CD Release Party @ the Barley House back 1/21/06). One day I will see an entire Airline show! From what I have heard, I really missed out by leaving this one.
I would recommend any of these artists to anyone out there who likes music that is well written, well arranged and well performed.
See you at the next show!
