Dallas has 2 of the top 20 country radio stations in the U.S.

99.5 The Wolf (No. 2) and 96.3 KSCS (tied at 13) - oh, and someone tell me how the hell Chicago, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have four of the top five country stations in America?

Below is the newest list of the country's Top 20 country stations (for ages 25-54), measured by Arbitron by some means I cannot and do not want to explain. You may read more detail about it in the latest Country Aircheck magazine, which is available online now only in glorious PDF.

Someone tell me how the hell Chicago, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh have four of the top five country stations in America, and why 14 of these 20 are north of the Mason-Dixon Line, and I am going to throw D.C. and Baltimore above that line, as well as Denver, for melodramatic purposes? I can guess many reasons why but I still have to rhetorically wonder.

Very easy reason, Blair. If my experiences in DC are any indication, most northern cities will have only one major country station, so the market doesn't fragment among several stations. What would be interesting to see is the total share of all country stations in DFW versus one of the northern markets you cite.

Maybe I don't pay much attention to this music genre, but when did country artists get the indie rocker makeover? It's really confusing. I say submit to stereotypes. Put the cowboy boots back on! And not Prada or Gucci cowboy boots, mind you.
