New CD and Music DVD Releases

Fresh spins for the week of November 14

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead: So Divided

Pioneering Austin-based rock band And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead return with their third and most compelling full-length yet. So Divided packs a hook-laden punch, as equal parts anthemic guitar, layered orchestration, and bitingly introspective lyrics crash and interweave.

The Game: Doctor's Advocate

Named in honor of Doctor Dre, one of The Game's mentors, this is his follow-up to his hugely successful previous release. Game releases his Doctor's Advocate after virtually coming out of nowhere and rising to West Coast superstar status with his first album, Game is the biggest (young) California rapper out today.

Damien Rice: 9

9 is the extraordinary follow-up to young Irish singer-songwriter Damien Rice’s critically acclaimed 2003 debut album which sold more than 2 million copies worldwide, including more than 1 million in the U.K. Touring this country and making a masterful television premiere on the Late Show with David Letterman, Rice entered the U.S. music consciousness. Considering the overwhelming response to these new songs, which Rice performed on tour this summer, 9 is set to take him even higher. Wrote Rolling Stone of 9: ''Songs that, for all their quietness, leave a dark, lasting impression.'' Newsweek: ''An out-and-out gorgeous CD, so full of undiluted, unfalsified emotions that it verges on open-heart surgery.'' The New Yorker: ''An album of understated gems.''

New DVDs

Asleep At The Wheel: Live From Austin Texas

Since its infectious 1974 debut, the country band Asleep at the Wheel has remained steadfast in its devotion to the music of Bob Wills and other western-swing greats of the past. Renowned as a killer live act, Asleep at the Wheel is captured live in this 1992 appearance on PBS's Austin City Limits, which has been expanded from its televised half-hour episode to include all 90 minutes of the band's performance, including signature songs like "Miles and Miles of Texas," "Corine Corina," and "Blues for Dixie."

Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Live At The Fillmore East

That concert finally makes its official debut in the annals of rock history with Live At The Fillmore East, and the circle is unbroken for one of rock’s greatest singer/songwriters. Live At The Fillmore East includes an extended ''Down By The River'' and a 16-minute ''Cowgirl In The Sand''. Country barnburner ''Come On Baby Let’s Go Downtown'' would later be heard on 1975’s Tonight’s The Night live album. 1977’s Decade collection contained a studio take of the countrified folk-rocker ''Winterlong.''

After a near death experience in the Pacific Ocean in 1978, Yusuf experienced a spiritual turning point, which included an indefinite hiatus from his multi-platinum recording career. After spending the past 28 years working as an advocate for peace, striving towards an end to poverty in war-torn nations and founding schools throughout London, Yusuf has returned to music to the delight of millions of fans. We’re progressing like musicians should."

Army Of Anyone: Army Of Anyone

Army of Anyone features Richard Patrick, the lead singer of Filter, Dean and Robert DeLeo, founding members of Stone Temple Pilots, and drummer Ray Luzier. The result "A Better Place," turned out to be prophetic, and the beginning of something new. Within a couple of days, the three musicians decided they would take this working relationship to the next level, and Army of Anyone was born.

The concert yielded what became Cash's best selling album up to that time, Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison. Johnny Cash At San Quentin, Folsom's follow-up and companion piece, upped the chart-success ante and then some. Originally a single album, At San Quentin is now a deluxe three-disc, Legacy Edition Package; two CDs containing 31 selections,13 them previously unissued, plus a DVD called Johnny Cash In San Quentin.

Lil' Flip & Mr. Capone-E: Connected

Reflecting upon the recent recording of Connected, Lil’ Flip had this to say: "What makes this album so real, so raw, so reflective of me, my music, life and lifestyle, is that everything I rap about on it is based on truth. So when I rhyme ''Dirty South'' style about the cars, the parties, the platinum, the women, life's lessons, whatever, it's not bragging, it's just fact." Mr. Capone-E is unstoppable and on top of his game as he continues to enjoy great success on radio across the US and abroad, dropping singles like they were rain drops. His hard work ethic and consistent quality of releases show it is no fluke - Mr. Capone-E, is considered the top Gangsta Rapper in the game today! His Soundscan numbers are consistent and his fans have never been disappointed with his talented lyrical abilities and bad-ass beats.

Joanna Newsom: Ys

A new Joanna Newsom album - yes! Well actually, Ys. Pronounced ''ees.'' It’s the title of an almost unspeakably incredible new Joanna Newsom album. Five songs, fifty-five minutes, one what-an-album! Ys is to Ms. Newsom a dream collaboration between her voice and harp and a full orchestra - a sound many of us fans have thought we were hearing when listening with closed eyes at her concert performances. Songs familiar to Joanna’s following are a big part of Ys, having been performed in concert over the past year - but not with the arrangements you’ll find on four of the five songs here. The wide-screen beauty of Ys is due to, among other things, a scrupulously all-analog production involving forty-odd tracks spread over two synched-up 24-track tape machines, mixed to tape and mastered at Abbey Road, home of the all-analog mastering path!

The sound is dominated by sub-bass, sturdy beats, Philly string flourishes and quirky electronic noises. To keep with the band’s sound evolution they chose to work with Neal Pouge and Serban Ghenea who fittingly are best known for their work Outkast and Nerd.
