Lakewood Shopping Center Tries To Deter Panhandling With Apple Campaign

Gary Griffith

The DMN reports that the Lakewood Shopping Center has started an anti-panhandling program in which merchants post apple-shaped signs to encourage shoppers to donate to charities who feed the homeless rather than give to panhandlers in the shopping center.

The program was councilman / mayoral candidate Gary Griffith's brainchild. It seems so simple that I wonder why it took nearly three months to get off the ground.

While I doubt the "Apple" program alone could have any impact, it will be interesting to see if the attendant patrols organized by the merchants' association will help.

What do you think?
