Central High’s Wizard of Oz flying into production
Flying by Foy will teach the CHS theatre students the art of production flying throughout the week. The students will then put their knowledge to good use for the Nov. 30-Dec. 3 productions of The Wizard of Oz.
This week, Central High School will take one flying leap toward making its current theatrical production a memorable one.
On Tuesday, a member of the Las Vegas Flying by Foy company will arrive to help the production get off the ground, literally. Flying by Foy will teach the CHS theatre students the art of production flying throughout the week. The students will then put their knowledge to good use for the Nov. 30-Dec. 3 productions of The Wizard of Oz.
Flying by Foy has flown numerous actors, musicians and celebrities such as Sean Connery, Lucille Ball, Diana Ross, Gene Kelly, Garth Brooks and David Letterman for stage productions. This sort of flying uses wires and pulleys and lends a more realistic tone to the productions.
“This is an exciting opportunity for the students of Central High to experience a theatrical invention perfected by the company who originally flew Mary Martin in Peter Pan,” said David Stevens, Keller ISD director of fine arts. “This should be just as exciting for the audience members, as it is for the students involved, to see an effortless and practically invisible system hoist the performers in the air and fly them across the stage.”
The flying system will be used throughout the production for not only the Wicked Witch of the West, but also her flying monkeys and more.
“We had this in mind from the very beginning,” said CHS theatre instructor Jennifer Snow. “This company has a great reputation and this is very safe so that’s why we went with them. Very few high schools get to do this kind of thing and we are very lucky to have the resources. It’s going to be a wonderful experience for the students and for the audience.”
The CHS Fine Arts Department will present The Wizard of Oz Nov. 30-Dec. 2. The Thursday, Friday and Saturday performances will be held at 7 p.m., with additional matinee performances at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $8 for students/senior citizens and $10 for adults.
