S.S. Conner Elementary celebrates 40th anniversary of reading program
The 40th anniversary of Reading Is Fundamental, the oldest and largest children's and family nonprofit literacy organization in the United States, was recently celebrated in Dallas at S.S. Conner Elementary School.
Dallas ISD has the second largest Reading Is Fundamental program of any school district in the country and one of the oldest—30 years, said representatives with RIF while in Dallas for the anniversary celebration.
The program serves almost 50,000 Dallas ISD students in prekindergarten through 8th grade at 92 schools. More than 150,000 books have been distributed to the students.
At the event Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson was honored for her longstanding support of the program.
Founded in 1966, Reading is Fundamental prepares and motivates children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to children and families who need them most. The program’s highest priority is reaching underserved children from birth to 8 years old.
Through community volunteers in every state and U.S. territory, RIF provides 4.5 million children with 16 million new, free books, and literacy resources each year.
