Deep Ellum Now Wireless
First antenna is up and working from Elm and Malcolm X over to a portion of Main Street.
Courtesy the Deep Ellum Residents Council, a portion of the neighborhood is wireless:
The first antenna is up and working all the way down to Sweet Endings on Elm and Malcolm X and over to a portion of Main Street. It should show up as “FREEDEEP” in your available wireless networks. A second antenna on Green Room’s roof top is now in place. An array of antennas will cover a 360º area in and around Deep Ellum.
If you have space on your rooftop for an antenna. Contact your property owner and tell them you want Free Deep Wireless.
Background from the company Deep Wireless in November 2005:
Deep Wireless is a free community wireless network that aspires to encompass all of Deep Ellum with a free wireless Internet experience. PrintElectric, Inc. Communication Design is the community sponsor, providing community coordination, technical installation and promotion for this endeavor. Diabetech is our corporate sponsor providing a state of the art Mesh Wi-Fi wireless network platform.
This project began when the guys from PrintElectric were subletting space from Diabetech. Three boxes were stacked up in the corner and Mark, from PrintElectric, asked what they did. As it turned out they were mesh wireless nodes intended for Diabetech’s wireless medical device testbed. When PrintElectric moved to Deep Ellum, we got busy working together to get these boxes up and running.
So, in addition to supporting some very cool new medical device R&D, PrintElectric will be experimenting with selling ad space to cover the operating costs of this project along with other interesting uses; some known and more yet to be discovered.
