Rage Against the Valet

11

I’d suggest you become downright indignant to the manager the next time a restaurant charges you to valet your car. Some people who don’t know any better will do whatever they’re told. They just take it,–either too stupid to notice or too sheepish or polite not to mention it to the owner.

Here’s why. The city requires a restaurant to have sufficient parking for its tenants. Sometimes there are not enough spaces required by city code to park a successful restaurant, but that’s not my gripe. When the restaurant blocks the “self park” spaces for valet use only, then you have no choice but to valet. Now I am happy to valet my car and tip the parker well, but to charge me for parking my car in addition to the tip is a total rip off.

Parking should be the restaurant’s expense, a cost of doing business–not a customer expense. You wouldn’t drop a few bucks in a bucket by the door to pay for their janitors to clean the place at night would you? Hell no. You’d feel insulted if the dishwasher came out and asked you for a tip. So why are they charging you for their restaurant parking? They have a parking lot, but they won’t let you use it. They are too cheap to pay for their own valet, and want you to pay for it. Avoid these places or tell them you feel violated.

Case in point. Question: What Dallas venue has set the pace for service for the past 25 years? Answer: The Mansion on Turtle Creek– give or take a hand full of gastro joints darting in and out of the culinary landscape. The Mansion has maintained the elegance, the peppy guest acknowledgement and a clear understanding of the big picture on service overall. Do they charge you to park your car while you spend money? Heavens no.

Then why should I go to a rather expensive Sardinian restaurant on Routh St. and be expected pay them a premium to eat their food but also to pay their valet $5.00 to park my car before I eat dinner? Not a lot of money but it puts a bad taste in my mouth. They have a parking lot, so why can’t I use it? This is why I never went back.

Hotels usually do this because they think they can get away with it just because people are used to paying for parking at hotels–but it is still low class. I took my love out to eat on our anniversary the other night at Craft. I dropped over $200 on a pretty good meal and we went to get the car at the valet. You’d think someone in public relations would have thought to comp the parking for the big spenders at Craft, but no, they asked me for $10.00 to get my car out of hock! At least they did it after I ate, but I won’t be going back.

Now West Village is a different matter. You don’t have to valet, they have plenty of parking and you can take a hike to park your own car if you like. Duni has no parking and valet parking is required, but it’s no charge. Stephen Pyles has valet, but there is no charge, just a smile and a “thank you sir”. Thanks for knowing who pays your bills, and thanks to the Mansion for setting the standard in Dallas.

Everybody charges for parking. I'd rather they be honest about it and charge me at the valet than add the $5 to the cost of my meal. What if I don't drive? I shouldn't have to pay.

Maybe this will encourage peeps to use Dart.

I will walk a mile to avoid valet parking. I'm willing to walk pretty far to avoid paying to park anywhere, but I absolutely refuse to ever allow anyone to park my car, period. Even if it's "free." I've known too many sketchy characters who've worked as valets to trust my car to one.

I especially like places like Glorias on Greenville or at the old Barley House on Henderson that'll put the valet stand in the back so that not only are you paying someone (who may or may not rifle through your car) 5 bucks to take your car 10 feet, your also performing this nefarious exchange at least 50 yards from the front door. What the hell is the point? Especially when its raining.

No question the Valet Mafia have taken over the city. I'll bend over backwards to avoid them. Not only do I hate them on principle, but a valet once did $500 worth of damage to the underside of my then brand-new car. I only discovered the damage days later, when a part fell off the car.

Why do I need some hurried, careless 19-year old idiot driving my car when I can park nearby myself? Why do restaurants with ample parking think valet service is necessary?

It's not the valet's fault they're at every business in town. Valet is a service demanded by the business. They aren't the ones that are charging you to park - it is the hotel, restaurant, whatever that gets that money. If you have a problem paying $10 to someone to park your car, then talk to the business. They're the ones telling the valets what to do.

I gladly valet my car everywhere I go. Who wants to park a mile away in heels? Paying in a parking lot to park your own car is one thing, but paying someone to park your car for you is another. If you're paying $5 - $10 for valet, then don't tip as much. Suck it up...this IS Dallas

The moment I saw a valet take a car and drive at a high speed while making a turn through a busy intersection -- all of this while going BACKWARDS -- was the moment I decided never to valet again.

And it does make a difference in my dining and entertainment choices. If I see a bar or restaurant making it difficult for me to get there without having to pay an unnecessary surcharge to park, I will be less likely to go there or to return.

Oh man.

I once let a guy valet my car. It was such a short distance, that I wasn't even in the building, before he was back, because he parked my car 30 feet away. Not to mention, he moved my mirrors to do this.

In college I had a ton of friends who did valet for extra cash. These guys were idiots. And they didn't care what happened to the cars, because the valet company "had insurance". Of course, by the time you go through all the time & trouble to get the money to fix the damage they might do, its not worth it.

And lastly... When I'm driving down Lower Greenville, and one of the valet guys from Kirby's (and they do it all the damn time), darts out in front of me, I do my absolute best to hit one. Because the valet company has insurance.

Good article.

Gregory's comment inspired me to share my favorite "Fun with Valet" stories:

1: When moving out of a house Uptown, I promised my pal Houston a nice lunch for helping me move. We valet parked the U-Haul at that fancy restaurant that used to be in a house beside what used to be Texadelphia (where ZaZa now stands).

As I worked at D Magazine at the time, I often had to go to hoity toity events at places like The Mansion. And I would, without batting an eye, valet park the Oldsmobuick and hand the befuddled valet the screwdriver. On the rare occasions I got flack, I would imperiously inform the lad that "This crap happened the last time I was here, so don't let it happen again."

Good times...
