The Denton school district is hosting its annual DISD Elementary School Science Fair Saturday, April 14, at Guyer High School Auditorium and Cafeteria, 7501 Teasley Lane. The exhibits will be open to the public from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday with a special awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m.
"The mission of this fair is to provide students with the opportunity to share their explorations in the world of science and to reward their efforts and accomplishments by showcasing their projects,’’ said Sharon Betty, elementary science coordinator third through fifth grade for Denton ISD.
Kathy Morrison, science coordinator for preschool through second grade, said the main purpose of the fair is to encourage students to develop a positive attitude toward the sciences and to possibly see themselves with careers in science, such as engineers, environmental scientists, doctors and medical assistants.
More than 280 elementary students who have already won at their local school science fairs will compete at the district-wide event. A Best of Fair and Best of Fair Runner-up trophy will be awarded for the kindergarten through first grade, second through third grade and fourth through fifth grade division.
Other awards include trophies for first-, second- and third-place winners in each grade level, kindergarten through fifth grade. There will also be about 70 special awards given to the students.
During the final stage of the judging, the Mean Green Physics Team will perform at 1:45 p.m. in the Guyer Auditorium.
Admission is free. For more information, call the Denton ISD curriculum department at at (940) 369-0660.
